“How can health be achieved if you are integrated into a sick society?”
***This episode will cover L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology***
Corporations are the bane of modern society. These legal persons have come to wield untold power and wealth, while controlling crucial systems on which modern life depends. Such legal entities have even successfully moved free speech, once found and protected in the public square, to corporately controlled servers that have thoroughly eliminated free speech. Luckily, we still have a legal system that provides ways to redress criminal acts, wrongs, and grievances. Unfortunately, the average small business/private individual cannot afford to take part in the legal system meant to protect them. Most corporations of size take full advantage of this sad truth.
One of the most insidious realities shielding powerful corporations is the corporate veil. This legal concept separates and protects the living, breathing owners of a corporation from personal liability, to include corporate actions and debts. And while the “corporate veil” can be pierced, it is very uncommon, with the courts having a “strong presumption” against such actions. Ironic that living people make decisions for lifeless legal entities called corporations, and yet remain mostly insulated from responsibility, in so many cases. It is no wonder that so many everyday people hold disdain for corporate bullying, which goes mostly unaddressed in any meaningful way.
But something has just changed in the last few weeks that may begin to shift power back to us commoners and small businesses. A small Lego business has become world-wide news, with an alleged valuable Lego theft having taken place at the hands of a big corporation. There are clips online now that seem to show someone from the big corporation flatly telling the alleged victim that they could not possibly afford to take this to court. The victim also alleges they lost their Lego store and life-savings to said big corporation. This is likely how things would have remained without the monetary power to demand redress. That is, until a well-known YouTube content creator (Reckless Ben) stepped in, shifting the balance of power in ways that may well change how powerful corporations choose to flex their muscles in the future.
There is much more to the Lego caper I have briefly described, but that is not the point here. The point is that a single YouTube creator has more than balanced the playing field. He has decidedly shifted the entire balance of power in the public eye to the alleged victim and to himself, as he is now facing corporate bullying, via a suit with a Rico charge levied by the alleged corporate Lego thief!
Believe me when I say there is likely to be a movie someday that covers what has happened here – over Legos! But there is even more. A small police department is also suffering a massive power loss through public perception, having conducted themselves in a way that has every legal-minded YouTube channel in need of content smiling ear to ear. The big corporation that is the alleged Lego thief is now perceived as needing nomination for the corporate bully of the year award, has also interacted with the local police in an effort to scare and silence Reckless Ben. The police conduct that follows is jaw-dropping, to say the least. And to put a cherry on top of this unsavory cake, it is all on film. Luckily, the police were able to redact the footage in an effort to protect certain individuals. Unfortunately, the unredacted footage is public now, and it turns out all the redaction was to cover-up their own conduct…unfortunate for them, not us!
The whole world is watching what one content creator (Reckless Ben) was able to accomplish, without fear, money, or a legal team. As it stands now, a major corporation has been brought to its knees, and a police department of about 20 officers is about to change drastically, from top to bottom. Along with those two organizations, who have already lost in the court of public perception, a couple of white knights have emerged: Reckless Ben and the CEO of Patreon.
In a world sick and tired of corporate unaccountability, wealth, power, bullying, control, and malfeasance, Reckless Ben has earned a public perception akin to David slaying the giant, with no armor and a small stone. No matter what the outcome of all this is, his actions have possibly redefined what is possible in the face of well-funded corporations and the ability of commoners to deal with them when wronged, threatened, or bullied.
The other white knight is the CEO of Patreon, who just earned what money cannot buy, with two words. He has been bestowed public respect, honor, and a standing ovation, that is still echoing across YouTube. And those two words: “Stuff it”, directed at the alleged Lego thief corporation. This was followed by an invitation by the CEO of Patreon to sue if they do not like his response. The big corporation that allegedly stole the valuable Legos had their lawyer send legal documents to Patreon, demanding Reckless Ben’s Patreon page be taken down. To underscore just how despicable this made them look in the public eye, it is Reckless Ben’s main source of revenue. This is perceived as a well-funded corporation trying to remove someone’s ability to make money and pay bills, not to mention mounting legal fees, and a ridiculous Rico charge only heard of in recent history, when organized Mafioso gangsters end up in court.
The one-sided balance of power in this country has been publicly called into question behind everything that has happened. The balance of power has been one-sided for so long, that we have watched a multimillion-dollar corporation involved in Lego toys destroy its public trust and reputation. It has doubled and tripled down at every turn, seemingly with the idea that well-funded corporations can do whatever they want to do, and sue when in doubt – because they can afford court, and most of us cannot. The alleged big toy corporation basically said as much early on in a recorded phone conversation to one of the alleged victims.
As for the police department, things could not be much worse, if lawyer-based YouTube channels are any indicator. The constitutional and legal abuses captured on film, and then unredacted, will have a hefty toll. The abuse of police power has been a main-stay on YouTube for some time now. What has happened around the alleged Lego theft has the potential to put pressure to change on police departments across the country.
The irony here is that I have not even mentioned the actual victim in all this drama. The main victim is a man who took his dying father’s life-long rare Lego collection (claimed $200k value) to a known Lego purveyor (not Lego inc.), only to see it disappear, as a corporate HQ took over a franchise. After years of struggle, he had nearly given up on his father’s collection, when Reckless Ben showed up. It does appear the initial victim has been made whole, and then some. This is also an indicator of what the public can achieve when riled into action.
At any time, this whole seedy affair could have been ended with the simple return of the collection, or monetary compensation to match. And yet, for some reason, the multi-million-dollar toy corporation thought it better to ignore, threaten, and sue. If this is not an indicator of the corporate privilege that has just been challenged, then I do not know what is. Something has just changed, and it can be repeated. Are we about to see a universal balance of power leveling? Time will tell, but the example now exists, and the whole world is watching.
I would like to wish you all a happy, healthy, and higher-minded new era.
